Tessie McCoy is a writer and filmmaker born in Sumter, South Carolina. She began writing poetry at thirteen, eventually developing a body of work that explores grief, faith, mental health, and the interior lives of Black families. After performing spoken word across the country, she expanded into narrative film, writing, producing, and directing her debut short film, Cracks in the Foundation, which won Best Original Screenwriting at the San Francisco Indie Short Fest and Best Direction at the WILDsound Film Festival, and screened at festivals nationwide.
Tessie has worked across film and television productions for companies including MACRO, A24, Apple TV+, Netflix, Hulu, and HGTV, gaining firsthand experience in the demands of visual storytelling.
Tessie’s spoken word background lends to her screenwriting, showcasing her unique voice and tone. She is committed to telling stories that hold space for both vulnerability and strength,centering character-driven narratives that promote Black life and culture in ways that we don’t often see on tv.
